Our next Black History Month Spotlight is Okinyi Ayungo, Executive Director of The Mind Body Studio at FitnessWise!

Q: What is the most important event or milestone to occur in your lifetime?
A: The most important event in my lifetime was my father leaving when I was 2 years old. It changed the level of respect and admiration that I have for my mother and the sacrifices that many mothers make to raise successful people. It led to a love of athletics and fitness as my mother found ways to keep 3 boys occupied. And it has changed the way that I approach fatherhood with our 3 children.

Q: Who has been the most inspiring leader to influence you in your personal and professional career?
A: The most inspiring leader to influence me is Maya Angelou. She talked the talk and walked the walk during her time on this earth. Aside from giving a beautiful voice to many who did not have the courage or power to speak, she was also instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement. One of her quotes that inspires the way I approach life is, "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it."

Q: What is the most important conversation that the business community should be having?
A: The business community should be having conversations in the lives and communities of their customers. While we may have a product or service that people want or need, engaging with customers while they are only in our business is not enough. Engaging with people in their lives pays dividends to the business, the community, and our society. If business leaders attend a community event, sponsor a local youth team (and attend a few games), or volunteer with their customers (or potential customers), then people know that we really care about them and their community. These interactions lead to conversations with people whom we may not normally interact. These conversations broaden our horizons, break down stereotypes and misconceptions, and builds relationships for life.

Any Member of the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce receives a complimentary, no obligation Fitness Consultation, 50% off of a Fitness Evaluation (normally $150), and 15% off of their first month of Personal Training.
